Last week at dinner on my yoga retreat in France, one of the women asked me bluntly, “Ok, Kristin, what’s really the deal with this creatine?” I loved her curiosity. She explained how, as a high school teacher twenty years ago, she’d seen boys taking it to bulk up for sports, and it left her with some negative associations. She assumed I was promoting something similar. So, I explained the science behind creatine, why it’s beneficial, especially for women, and how the athletes back then were likely overloading on much higher doses. It sparked a conversation on what supplements we should really be taking and how we can share our secrets with each other. It was fun to see all the women chime in (most in their 30s to 50s) and share what works for them.
I’ve experimented with various supplements over the years — I’m my own guinea pig. Before recommending anything, I always test it out on myself first. But I think it's important to remember that what works for one person might not work for another. And while it's wise to consult a doctor or dietician, it's even more crucial to listen to your body. Ultimately, you need to decide what works for you.
Recently, a gynecologist suggested I start estrogen and progesterone therapy. I gave it a try for seven weeks, but honestly, I didn’t feel any different, and it wasn’t right for me. This experience reminded me that not all treatments — whether prescriptions or supplements — are for everyone. Just because a doctor or influencer recommends something doesn’t mean it’s the right fit. Sometimes, you need to give it time, but also trust your own instincts.
Now, here’s what I do take and why.
Every morning, I add collagen to my coffee. It’s great for hair, skin, nails, joints, and bones, especially since we lose collagen as we age. I prefer the powder form for better absorption. My favorite brand is Further Foods — it dissolves easily, tastes great (trust me, the vanilla flavor in coffee is delicious!), and it’s third-party tested. Plus, it’s women- and minority-owned. I love the variety of flavors, and I even mix it with hot cocoa at night! Use code kmcgee for 18% off their products.
Instead of HRT, I like Rebalance. I started with their anxiety system, which made me feel more balanced. I also tried their hot flash system (I don’t get hot flashes but do have brain fog), which works for all perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms. The lozenges are time-released, and I love that they’re all-natural and made with herbs. The founder’s focus on cortisol levels resonates with me. He’s done a ton of research on how to manage cortisol levels and was recently mentioned in TIME magazine as having one of the most innovative products.
At lunch, I finish off with Gruns gummy bears. I’m kind of obsessed! They’re easy to take, taste great, and are perfect for on-the-go. Plus, my boys love the kids’ version. It’s just a fun way to get my vitamins. It’s like a little sweet treat for me, and I honestly don’t crave anything else after them, surprisingly.
When it comes to creatine, I’ve heard different opinions on timing — some say before or during a workout, but I just take it daily, usually in the morning or afternoon when I need hydration. Mind Body Green is my go-to brand, and their electrolytes blend is my favorite. I also love the raspberry flavor with added taurine. It’s been a game-changer for so many I’ve recommended it to.
Occasionally, I’ll finish my night with Kreature Sleep. It has L-theanine and other sleep-friendly ingredients but no melatonin. The founder, who also makes amazing overnight oats, really nailed it with this product. I often drink it while I am making his oats (the chocolate and peanut butter banana are to die for), knowing I'm getting 30 grams of protein to start the next day.
So that’s about it. I like to make things easy and doable. Collagen in my coffee, creatine in my water, gummy bears at lunch, a little sleepy cocoa at bedtime, and easy-to-take lozenges throughout the day. There are a few more things I’m curious to start using more, like EAA’s and possibly extra fiber. An amazing woman I met on the retreat lent me some fiber gummies one day, and they tasted great. I also forgot to mention that when I travel, I like to take some magnesium with me, not only to help with sleep but also to keep me regular.
I’d love to hear what you’re taking and what you’ve found most beneficial when it comes to supplementation.
You got me on to the Activé Fiber shakes and now I am hooked:)
