I often will say in my yoga classes, especially when we are in deep hip openers, how our hips are like the basement of our houses. We store a lot of physical and emotional stuff down below; and hip opening postures can definitely bring up the junk in our trunks. The beautiful thing about yoga, is it can be a form of somatic exercise with its focus on internal awareness, sensation, and releasing muscular tension. The word “soma” means body. Somatic movement is more intuitive and less about an external result. When you’re in yoga class and you’re getting in touch with what you’re storing in your body and how you can let it go, you’re doing somatic yoga.
