I have never been a fan of a quick fix diet or a juice cleanse; nor intermittent fasting (just doesn’t work for me). I find it always backfires and you end up back where you began or even worse. It’s not sustainable (or enjoyable) long term. I’ve always been a proponent of eating a healthy, balanced diet that you love. You don’t need to deprive yourself of anything; but what I’ve noticed, is when I eat good organic fruits and veggies and healthy grains and proteins, I really crave the junk a lot less. Ideally, I like to eat 80% “clean” and leave the other 20% for fun!
I’m a single mom of three young boys who mainly want to eat five things in rotation: pizza, pasta, quesadillas, chicken and french fries, hamburgers and tater tots. I try my best to sneak in vegetables for them and to get them to eat meals I’d cook for myself; but from what it seems, most kids their age crave these same foods. I choose the healthiest options and let them have what they will enjoy and eat. That leaves me to fend for myself; and most nights, I am exhausted to prepare a meal.
I love to cook; but cooking for one isn’t as fun. I discovered Sakara meals years ago when I first met the founders Whitney and Danielle. I’m so impressed and how they’ve grown and I love their mission statement: “To give you science-backed, plant-rich nutrition to nourish your gut and metabolic health. To build your most vital foundation. To empower you with tools to transform your well-being.” My favorite thing about these meals is the little message on each package that tells you why the superfoods they’ve added are good for you. I really feel lighter, brighter and more energetic after I eat Sakara. I feel satisfied as well; and I notice the biggest change for me, is I’ve pretty much eliminated alcohol from my diet because of Sakara (and my twice daily meditation practice). Don’t get me wrong, I’ll have a glass of wine here and there; but when I’m eating Sakara meals, I really have no desire for it. I used to want to pour a small glass of red almost nightly.
Sakara is a meal delivery service that is meat-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free so it is beneficial for those who have allergies. Sakara is not about starving yourself at all; but instead listening to your body and seeing how it feels when you eat good, healthy plant based foods. You’ll feel more energized and function at your highest ability physically and mentally. If you are a meat loving person, you can add your own healthy proteins to the meals. On days when I am extra hungry, I will add some hard boiled eggs to the dinners, or an extra protein shake mid morning or mid afternoon. You can also add some shrimp to a salad. I also always add collagen powder to my morning coffee to up my protein intake.
Sakara uses all organic produce and they source their ingredients from the highest quality vendors. Sakara is pricier because of their high standards. As a single mom, I am also on a tight budget. If I could order it 5 days a week every week, I would; but I can’t afford it. I’ve found ways to incorporate these amazing meals into my life by sticking to either a 2 or 3 day plan. I added a subscription which brings the cost down. You can always skip from week to week. You can also use my code KMMSAKARA for 20% off if you are a new customer. If you find the meals are bigger than you normally eat (for me I need to eat the entire thing); you can split them in half and add a high quality inexpensive protein to the meal and you’ll have them last longer. You can also opt for just lunches or just lunch and dinner and make your own overnight protein oats for breakfast or another healthy option. I have to admit, their breakfasts are to die for. I am working on making my own Sakara style doughnuts. I’ll share my recipe with you soon.
I am not a registered dietician; but I do have my precision nutrition certification as well as my nutritious life coach certification. I have also experimented over the past 30 years with so many different options and I’ve found that one size doesn’t fit all; but everyone can benefit from eating more plant based meals. Protein is the big buzz word these days, and yes you do need protein; but you also need carbohydrates and fats. You will get a well rounded balanced meal program with Sakara and it is a great way to reset or just treat yourself to feeling your best. This month I’ve personally signed up for 3 days a week of B, L, D. The great news is if you join for 4 weeks anytime in September you’ll also get a 3 month subscription to ALO moves (I still have some content on there!) and other awesome freebies (it’s worth signing up just to get their salad dressings). If you want to join me, we can also create a little group here to share feedback.
