I went to New York University in the 90’s. I was studying theater at NYU; and every morning one of the students, Nikki Costello, at Stella Adler (a year ahead of me) would come and lead us in yoga before our acting classes. I fell in love with yoga immediately. I honestly felt like I had done headstands in my past life. It was as if yoga had found me again; or I was rediscovering something that I couldn’t live without. I went religiously to Jivamukti on 2nd avenue every evening after school. I started to eat, breath, and sleep yoga.
After I graduated with my BFA in theater, I certified to teach yoga to support me as I pursued an acting career. I taught daily and sometimes logged thirty to forty classes a week. I was also waiting tables and dog walking at that time. I was maybe getting paid $10 a class sometimes $20 but it sure wasn’t much in the beginning. I didn’t care. I loved it. I felt nervous and excited every time I taught. I wanted my classes to be really good and I also wanted to keep learning as much as I could. I’d do lots of workshops and go on retreats and study with amazing teachers. I soaked it all in. It wasn’t overnight that I had any real success as a yoga teacher. It took time; but looking back on it, I was so immersed in the journey, it didn’t matter to me. I loved practicing, learning and teaching.
Eventually I was making around $50-80 a group class and $120-200 a private. Once I joined Peloton in 2018, after teaching for twenty years, I finally had a secure paycheck with benefits. I never really taught yoga (or movement) to make lots of money, though. I’d teach yoga anytime, anywhere, to anyone. I love to share it with as many people as I possibly can. It has done so much for me, I want others to feel the same way. Now, I’m beyond grateful that it does support me and Peloton was sure a blessing in disguise. It truly helped me navigate some really hard times and break free from my marriage knowing I could support myself finally financially. I’m very lucky to say I can do what I love for a living.
I’ve always found such joy in teaching. It is sometimes the only place where I feel confident. Becoming a yoga teacher is a journey that allows you to keep on growing. I am still learning something new about myself and about the practice daily. I will never forget my first teacher training and how special it was. I want to offer something to others who also want to become teachers or who want to deepen their knowledge and yoga practice. I also want to help students who want to make this their full time job find a way to earn a good living. Part of the training I am offering will include the business side of yoga.
I cannot believe I have the opportunity to lead my first ever Yoga Teacher Training. I’m partnering with the incredible True North Yoga studio to offer an in person and online 200 hour Yoga Alliance teacher training. My goal is to help you feel comfortable and confident as a teacher. I also want you to walk away feeling like you’ve deepened your practice and you had a solid foundation to build upon. I also want my students to know they are not alone and after certification I am always available to help however I can.
Here is the link to the training. Please reach out to me with any questions you may have. I am beyond excited for this and I can’t wait to meet all of you who join me!
I’ve practised with you online for almost 20 years and I fell in love with yoga back then. You inspired me to take my first yoga teacher training 10 years ago! 💖 I’d love to do this with you (because I’m always learning too) but I just had a baby 👶🏼 so I’m in a different season of life at the moment. I’m sure it’s going to be amazing!
Thank you for this and more importantly for the work that you do.
